People write screenplays in teams, why not a book over a weekend?
Have an event where participants get to pitch a story idea. After, everyone can vote on a couple of them to narrow them down. Then people can join up in teams with the ideas that were voted on. Over the next day or two, they can collaborate to write the story. At the end, a winner can be chosen.
